OOOPS Sorry, I forgot about the intrinsic capacitance of the antenna. Antennas shorter than a quarter-wavelength have capacitive reactance.
You are missing half the tuning circuit. The coil of wire is an “Inductor”. Collective with a “Capacitor” (Two conductive sheets with a space linking them), you have a tuned circuit that can discriminate linking different frequencies. I suspect you are just picking up the strongest station and so may possibly do away with the coil entirely.
